Plan management usually means a plan manager pays providers on the participant's behalf and helps keep track of the budget. It offers flexibility in provider choice while reducing the admin load on the participant or family.

For many people, that makes plan management a practical middle ground between full control and full administration.

Self-management gives the participant direct control over provider payments, records, and spending decisions. That can offer more flexibility, but it also requires more confidence with invoices, documentation, and budgeting.

The administrative side is often the deciding factor. Some participants value the extra control, while others prefer help with the paperwork.

The best choice usually depends on how involved the participant or family wants to be in the administrative side of support. If keeping track of invoices sounds stressful, plan management may be a better fit. If direct control matters most, self-management may make more sense.
